What's in a BRAND name?

Have you ever wondered why adidas is called so?

or why Dabur is named in such a way?

or why a car manufactured by Mr. Benz is called Mercedes-Benz?

These are the questions that fascinated me since an early age.  I got most of the answers (still, not all) on internet after I statrted net surfing.
I have to search n-numbers of websites for these informations. Sometime on wikipedia, sometime on google, sometime on some other website.
I never found a place where I could get all the information.

So, the thought of creating a new blog came into my mind. A place where a person can get information regarding the story behind a BRAND name.

Hence I present before you........my latest blog:

Please dont read it

Please dont read it. It's not for you. I request you that whatever I have written here, please dont read it. You will not get anything after reading it. You will only waste your time. You know it very well that time wasted can't be regained. Nothing wrong has happened till now, accept my request and please dont read it. There is no need to be tenacious but what is this? You are still reading it! You are not getting affected by my repeated requests :( . My friend, there is still some time. Dont simply ignore me. You are an intelligent person, please dont read it. Ohhhh God! you are still reading it. I am sorry but you seem to be a 'chikna ghara'. Anyway, I will not force you anymore. It was my duty to make you aware and I have performed it very well. Now you have read it. Tell me, what have you got? You just wasted your time. If  only you would have listened to me like an intelligent person then it would have been much better. You are still the same. Still not affected by anything. You are still reading it. Now I understand that you will not stop reading it, so I am finishing it here.

The Traits of a Bengali

Having lived in Bengal for almost 3 years now and on continuous observation of people in and around the area, there are certain similarities I’ve noticed between members belonging to the Bengali community.

1.They are very simple people or rather should I say simple living, high thinking.
2.Most of them wear spectacles since an early age.
3.Most of them are brilliant students growing up to become famous scholars.
4.The elderly usually wear a half-sleeved kurta mostly with floral print, over dhoti or pyjama.
5.Their pronunciation is dominated by "O". There is no "V", only "B". They write 'rasgulla' and     pronounce it as 'roshogolla'. 'Sanjay', 'Vijay' etc. are 'Sonjoy', 'Bijoy'. An easy way to imitate would be to assume your mouth is full of a Roshogolla as you try to say these words.
6.Their handbags always contain an umbrella and a water bottle.
7.They have a habit of chewing pan after lunch or dinner and also in between.
8.They are very good at extra-curricular activities like singing, music and dance.
9.They still enjoy the theatre. i.e. dramatics.
10.They possess ultimate stamina for verbal altercation. They can argue for hours, without touching any one. They rarely get into physical disputes.
11.Their political rallies and demonstrations are are always dominated by a phrase 'cholbe na' (which means 'nahi chalega').
12.They never eat rotis for lunch. Only rice.
13.They never eat rotis for dinner. Its rice again.
14.They use fish as a suppliment of food. Maacher jhol and bhaat is an unbeatable combo for any bengali.
15.They are very good at chatting in groups at a favourite corner at any convenient time. This is formally known as 'addabazi' in thier lingo.
16.They never drink anything. They only eat. Be it tea, coffee or water.
17.Their functions are never complete without two compulsory dishes: fried-rice & mishti chutney.
18.They eat, I mean drink, very small quantities of tea and coffee but quite frequently.
19.They have a habit of eating something or the other during their journeys, however small they may be.
20.Jhaalmuri & chop-singhara are among their favourite snacks.
21.Potata is an integral part of their recipes.
22.They read their newspaper faithfully.
23.They still get lost in the music when it comes to Rabindra Sangit .
24.Almost all Bengali ladies have beautiful eyes.
25.Almost all Bengali gents have beautiful moustaches.
26.Their favourite game is football. Even children prefer football over cricket. It’s no wonder that Sourav Ganguly also wanted to be a footballer initially.
27.They will not let you occupy even a fraction of their ‘reserved berth’ while travelling, no matter how thin you maybe.
28.They are fond of sweets. Roshogolla, chom-chom, mishti doi, sondesh….
29.They are very possesive about eminent Bengali personalities and talk about them with an air of pride.
30.They are a part of one or the other club and also an ardent fan of one or the other ‘football club’.
31.They can eat muri with a variety of combinations- with water, milk, banana, onion, chilly, chana.
32.They worship more Goddesses than Gods.
33.They are very proud of the rich culture they come from.
34. They are very talented to find out suitable excuses; be it anything!
35. One Bengali can never stand other Bengali’s achievements.
36. They are fond of gossips and caricatures.
37. At least once in a lifetime,a Bengali will seriously think about doing a business; most of them never do it,but cherish the dream.
38. They are fond of Government jobs, the trend slightly changed now a days, but they are still stuck to it. 39. Most of the Bengali boys are Mom’s child; even when they are grown ups, they cant think themselves independent enough.
40. Major part of their life is spent in indecision, confusion and fear of unknown facts.

All views expressed above are personal without any intention to hurt the sentiments of anyone.

The "Yum Factor" of my life

What flashes into your mind when you think of the word YUMMY? For me, it’s a variety of things which I intend to discuss here. I have had the privilege to dine at some fine restaurants during those hours when I could hog due to hunger. I’ve also been lucky to be able to treat myself during those not-so-hungry-yet-need-to-munch-something times. Bringing across to you flavours and mouth watering aroma from all over India.
Among these are few eat-outs which I have visited a few only once but the taste or the impact of the ambience is still vivid in my mind- so fresh and so yum.

So read on…a yummy article of a-not-so-yum blog by a non-yummy person.

 Karim’s, NCR
To me non-veg in Delhi = @ Karim’s.
When I am in Delhi, I just have to be there. Pick up any item at random from the menu and you can bet on its yumminess. Their mutton recipes are tastier than the chicken ones. When I was in Gurgaon, I tasted NIHARI (a ramzaan special dish). It was the most delicious nihari I have ever tasted. And don’t ever miss their chutney.

Al-bake, Delhi
A small restaurant at community centre, NFC. I still remember the first time when I was forced by my dear friend to taste its special Chicken Schwarma (a Lebanense dish). I didn’t like it too much in the first go. But on repeatedly tasting it, it became one of my favourite dishes till date. If you ever get a chance to go there, don’t miss it’s preparation. Watching it being prepared serves as an appetizer for the actual dish.

Paradise, Hyderabad
Luckily, during all my trips to Hyderabad I stayed opposite to Paradise. And my experience says that it justifies its name. Literally a paradise for food-lovers. Biryani is a subset of Hyderabad but Paradise is a superset of Biryani. Available in 3 variants- chicken, mutton & veg. Try any and satisfaction is guaranteed. Served with heavy quantity of raita, salad and shorba. The only negative point is the quantity they serve. It’s too much to be consumed by a normal person. Something like the stomach is full but ye dil maange more. Unfortunately there is no provision for half plate. Hope to taste another delicacy called haleem- a Ramzaan specialty at Paradise.

Chandni Chowk, Bangalore
This restaurant features in my post not mainly because of its taste but because of its ambience. It's a theme restaurant with typical Punjabi food. You see yourself inside a semi lit eat-out, pebbles under your feet, stone tables and benches, thin glittery curtains daintily hanging. The walls have larger than life pictures of Bollywood heroes and heroines. Soon you realise that they are also featuring on the table mats. The menu is interesting- made of cloth, embroidered and painted , green on one side and yellow on the other with things like roti-shoti, chai-shai mentioned on it. The turban-clad waiters add to the ambience. The food is good but a little heavy on your wallet. Anyway, a must try for a different experience.

Sri Guru Residency, Mysore
A pure vegetarian family restaurant with lot of variety to choose from and at affordable prices. While dining at Sri Guru, my meal always starts with Gobi Manchurian and fresh lime soda. Then follows a paneer dish with a combination of naan aur kulchas. Almost all the dishes are worth trying except a selected few which did not manage to tingle my taste buds. For desserts it’s got to be Gadbad (Sri Guru’s special ice-cream topped with fruits & nuts). Step out of the restaurant, and there’s paanwala will waiting for you. Have it and enjoy!!!

Golden Landmark, Mysore
The name itself indicates a Landmark restaurant and so it is. The best time to dine there is during weekends when buffet is served. This consists of almost 6-8 types salads (some names are like tongue-twisters), a variety in the main course ranging from Chinese to Italian to North Indian to South India and last but not the least 3-6 types of desserts. The taste isn’t really great but the ambience is good. A personal favourite because of its ambience and the variety they serve. A buffet there is worth every penny you spend!

Tundey Kebabi, Lucknow
If you are non-vegetarian, then you must taste tundey kebabs. I first got a chance to taste it in Sahara Mall, Gurgaon. During my recent visit to Lucknow, I relished a dinner of tundey’s kebab paratha. Awesomely yummy! Their specialty is galawati kebab and paratha. Must try!

Mezbaan, Aligarh
My favorite party place while I was in Aligarh. Karhai Chicken and Chicken butter masala prepared there have an unbeatable taste. My most favorite dish at Mezbaan is Chicken Manchurian. Its truly unmatchable. Yum factor is so high at Mezbaan that I cant resist going there whenever I get a chance.

McDonalds
The yummiest thing at McD is its newly introduced McNuggets- chicken khane ka naya style. I first tasted it as a mini breakfast at Gopalan Mall, Bangalore with a special person which made the nuggets all the more yummier. The barbeque dip is similar to tomato ketchup so it’s better to try mustard dip. McVeggie burger is my favorite. McPuff is ok but the stuffing is extra hot. So watch your tongue before it burns. Meal at Mcdonald’s has got to end with a McSwirl. And be careful while picking the items. I remember ordering a coffee, cola and burger all in one go and didn’t know which sequence to follow while eating! But the final statement always remains... M lovin' it !

Pizza Hut
It’s “The place” for Pizzas. When in a mood to have a simple one,Veggie lovers is a good choice. Can even try Shahi Panner Pizza for a more Indian taste to this Italian dish. Recently, when Lara Dutta persuaded so much, I gave Cheesy Bites a shot but didn’t find it worth.

KFC
Pick up a simple hot & crispy chicken delight and krushers. You will love it. Simply simple and simply yummy! Chicken that's crispy outside and juicy inside. That's Kent's Fried Chick simplified for you.

Dasaprakash, Agra
A south-indian restaurant located in Sadar Bazaar. I went to this restaurant only once in the Y2K but still the taste of dosa is fresh in my mind. The best dosa and the best nariyal chutney I’ve ever had.Yes, better than what you could expect in the land where dosas originated. Very delicious. I remember it being rather costly at that time. I paid Rs.50 when at other places it would cost merely Rs. 15. But paying so much was worth. No regrets!

TRUTH

The truth isn't the truth until people believe you, and they can not believe you if they do not know what you're saying, and they can not know what you're saying if they do not listen to you, and they will not listen to you if you are not interesting, and you will not be interesting unless you say the truth.

The Slumdog Tiger by Danny Adiga

Have you ever noticed the similarities and differences between two great works related to India?

Slumdog Millionaire- a movie, and
The White Tiger- a novel

One by Danny Boyle, other by Arvind Adiga.

One tells the story of Jamal Malik from Mumbai Slums, other regarding Balram Halwai from Laxmangarh (so called dark India by Mr Adiga).

So many differences but still.........

Both released in the same year.

Both deal with poor India (the REAL INDIA for the West).

Both are at thier best in criticising India in every possible way.

Both show that India is still slave of poverty, corruption, religious differences etc.

And for all this criticism, both have got prizes. 8 Oscars and 1 Man Booker prize.

The point I want to prove is that the World (consisting of Developed countries) appreciates the persons who are at its best in criticising India.

aakhir kab tak ye sab chalta rahega?

We should be recognised for our positives now.

deewar kya giri mere kachche makaan ki
logo ne mere sehn me raste bana liye
___________
zalzale oonche makaano ko gira dete hain
me to buniyaad ka paththar huu mujhe khauf nahi
___________
main kese chhor duun aadat sharaab peene ki
abhi to mere baap ka aadha makaan baaqi hai
___________
ye theek hai andhera nahi hai mehfil me
na jaane chiraag par kya kya guzar rahi ho hogi
___________
hayaat ek chiraag hai, chiraag ki hayaat kya
bahut jala to jal gaya bus ek raat ke liye
___________
rone waalo se keh do unka bhi rona ro lein
jinko majbooriye haalaat ne rone na diya

Mr. Shakespeare, I can write an entire article on my name. And you ask 'What's in a name?'

My name is 'Mohammad Amiqu Ahmad Khan'.

Officially my name is 'Mohd Amiqu Ahmad'.

Does it matter to you?

Do you have any problem with it?

Does it ring bells in your ears?

Being well-cultured, well-mannered and well-educated person I expect a NO from you. But it is not the case with remaining 99% people (approximate).

Some has problems with my surnames. Why I have all the famous Muslim surnames in my name. According to them, I should choose any one among Mohammad, Ahmad and Khan.

I have never been able to understand their logics.

Do they have to pay anything to write or say all the surnames?

Or am I stealing some Government tax for having more then one surname…?

People say that why I use Mohd in place of Mohammad. They suggest that if I am using abbreviation, it should be Md not Mohd.

To hell with them and to hell with their logic!!!

I am a free Indian and I also know English. English grammar says it loudly that you have full rights over proper noun.

Isn't my name a proper noun? Doesn't it sound proper?

And the most inquisitiveness is regarding the spelling of my name.

It should be Amique because after Q, ue is compulsory (grammatically).

I should be in line with words like Cheque, Unique, Mozambique……………

It's my name and I have full rights over it. Again I would like to give the same reason that I am just using the liberty of spelling a proper noun in its own way.

My surname is also spelled wrongly most of the time. Some time it is MohammEd. Some time it is AhmEd. Thank God! That nobody writes Kaan in place of Khaan.

Nobody raises a word when Merath is spelled as Meerut.

Nobody raises a word that why 'pore' is used in place of 'pur' as suffix in name of many cities (such as Barrackpore).

Nobody raises a word when 50% people pronounce Delhi as DEHLI.

Nobody raises a word about the spellings of diarrhea, pneumonia etc etc.

Agar sab kuchh yehi khatam ho jata to koi baat nahi thi……….

The main problem is the n-types of pronunciation of my first name that I have heard since my childhood.

Ameet…………….. Ameek…………. Ameekoo………… Aamik………..Mohammad (few people had thought that it's my first name because it comes first)

And many more………….

99.9% people are unable to pronounce my name in first go.

100% people are unable to write my name correctly. (I sympathize with them. I understand that spelling is unique)

50% people pronounce it wrongly even after knowing it.

85% people write my name wrongly out of their habit, in spite of reminding them again and again.

I am fed up of all this and because of only this I have decided to discuss it on my blog.

An interesting incident happened when I received my degree certificate. It was handed over to me but according to that, some Mr. Mohd Amique Ahmad has passed B.Tech. with honors.

To hell with all this!!!!

chaar saal din raat ek kar ke humne parhai ki aur degree de di kissi aur ko

Finally, I decided to write a letter to authorities but they were asking for proof that I am Amiqu (bina E wala Amiqu). I attached all my previous certificates with the application. I highlighted a sentence especially for them. I want to let all the persons known and unknown to me, that special sentence of mine:

"THERE IS NO 'E' IN MY NAME "

My story. My blogs.

I know how to use computer. I can recognize the keys of keyboard. I can use MS office better then 95% Indians. I know how to prononunce computer and I even know that itz called 'sangarkam' in sanskrit.

Later on I started using internet. But internet entered into me in an order: chatting, mailing, googling, orkutting. In the said sequence.

And then one fine day I got to know about blogs.

My first blog was regarding the things I know very well. BANKNOTES. After all that's my job.
http://banknotepeople.blogspot.com

Second blog was regarding my years old passion. Passion of writing ghazals. I published very few of my creations there and hope to add some more soon.
http://masoomshayri.blogspot.com

And the third one is this. Regarding me. Regarding my waahiyaat thots. Reagrding ool julool baatein. Regarding life...........zindagi...........hayaat!!!!
http://jhaalmurie.blogspot.com

Now you may be wondering about the names of blogs.

For the first one, my choice was 'banknote' but it was not available so had to go for 'banknotepeople'. Luckily we are also called banknote people.

For my ghazal blog, initially it's name was 'amq-ghazal' but recently i changed it in a need of more happening name. Tried 'azadkhyal' and few others........... but they were not available so here comes 'masoomshayri'.

For my personal blog, 'jhaalmuri' was the first choice but the name was not available so added an extra E :). I cant think of any other name except this one. Chahe kitne bhi E aur kyu na lagane parte but naam jhaalmuri hi rakhna tha. After coming to bengal, it was the main thing i used to face every now and then. And the top secret: I STARTED LOVING IT. I LOVE U JHAALMURIE.

one more from my childhood collection :)

faithfulness

one of my favourite poems of school days...... read somewhere in a school magazine

Isnt it a wonderful wish?

WE vs. BIRDS

read these lines printed on a pamphlet years before in Gwalior.
these lines are still fresh in my mind.....
Isn't it true?

LONDON DREAMS SHATTERED :(

I was in Kolkata on an official trip when ‘London Dreams’ released. It was 30th October’ 2009. I was watching the movie (evening show) when I got the most shocking news of my life. My younger sister expired at 7pm on that day. It is the worst incident that ever happened in my life. She was suffering from normal fever and succumbed to her life.

To add to it, I was unable to find a single flight that could lift me upto Delhi or Lucknow. Why the hell don't these airline companies run domestic flights at night and that too on a weekend?? The first flight was at 0630 next morning. I had no option apart from waiting.

That night seemed like an eternity. My impatience reached to its peak. I was at the airport by 5 am next morning.

Anyway, with lot of hurdles, travelling on mahaan Indian roads, I finally made it to my hometown by 1530 hrs.

Buried her at 1700 hrs. The worst moment of my life :(
